The Not-For-Profit Sector – When Message Is Everything

Zeba soil amendment is made from natural cornstarch. It’s biodegradable, nontoxic and virtually odorless. Each particle can absorb up to
400 times its weight in water, then release and reabsorb water over and over as demanded by shallow turf crop roots such as wheat, potatoes and corn. As a startup with few marketing dollars they were getting the word out with a low concentration of space ads in trade publications, which were not working hard enough.

To generate leads we developed a “wide net” direct mail strategy with multi-variant testing of formats, creative and offers with unique messaging for each crop industry targeted. Even the call-to-action featured a test. We offered a unique PURL for each recipient allowing him or her to respond either visiting the web via this PURL, or by calling an 800 number. Our robust testing matrix proved very beneficial as, contrary to our best guess, a self-mailer version of our creative beat the envelope package hands-down at a lower cost per piece, thus maximizing their precious marketing dollars.

TracFone – Finding the Perfect Media Mix

Sometimes success can limit perspective. TracFone was already a very successful national wireless provider and a well-known name in prepaid phones when they came to PMAP for a simple test to introduce their new brand, Safelink Wireless. TracFone had a multi-channel marketing engine driven by a powerful broadcast media strategy when they approached us with a direct mail test. We studied their demographic base, results and fulfillment strategy and boldly promised that direct mail would outperform their broadcast media.

We tested our way to the optimal package and refined the fulfillment with a mix of web and IVR solutions. The direct mail not only generated a better cost per lead, but a better close rate over all when comparing hits or sales over those that were driven via TV. This success led to a rapid, multi-state rollout of this winning strategy. Today, we are mailing millions of pieces annually for acquisition, upsell and retention purposes and are now helping with their in-store sales strategy and point-of-purchase displays as well.

Standard TV & Appliance – Using Direct Mail To Transform Retail

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is not a maxim we adhere to in principle. Testing is the heart of direct marketing and the only way to optimize performance and improve ROI. Testing isn’t sexy or flashy. And unlike creative work, testing strategies rarely win you new business. But, testing is what transforms businesses and helps us retain clients.

When Standard TV approached us they were hoping to increase their response rates and wondered if we could come up with creative that yielded a better response. But the first thing we did was took a hard look at their mailing list. We wondered if their response had diminished due to message fatigue or if they simply weren’t reaching the right people with a perfectly sound message. A simple list cleaning via the National Change of Address (NCOA) database and adding CASS certification yielded a savings in some $25k in wasted postage. But we did not stop there. The next step was to optimize a message and offers that had always worked, against a better-qualified demographic over targeted geo-specific areas around a store. We created and tested a four-variable mailing strategy that ultimately added some one hundred thousand new qualified customers to their list for future mailings.
